South Africa - Useful Tips

South Africa is a large, diverse country that offers the visitor numerous opportunities. From the rich savannah of the north, to the pristine beaches of the coastline to the magnificence of the Drakensberg, South Africa has something to offer for all visitors. 

Accommodation
There is a lot of different accommodation options available. From 5 start lodges and resorts to simple, but elegant, bed and breakfasts. All accommodation is rated and graded to ensure they meet national standards.

Entry
A valid passport (dates valid up to six months after date of departure) and a return ticket is required to the enter the country.
Visas are necessary for some countries. Please check with a consulate for more information.
A valid, up to date yellow fever vaccination and Yellow Card is required if you are travelling from a yellow fever area.

Driving
Left-hand side of the road.
Foreign licences accepted if they have a photograph and signature.
Petrol stations are not self service; you will be attended to.

Electricity is 220-240V, 50 Hz.
Time Zone is Greenwich Mean Time 2 throughout the year.
South Africa has nine 11 official languages but English is spoken and understood throughout the country.

Health
Malaria is a problem in certain parts of the north west. Check with your tour operator and remember to use prophylactics.
Tap water is treated and safe to drink, though may be brackish in rural areas.

Money
The local currency is the Rand.
Money can be exchanged at airports or banks.
Credit cards are accepted in most locations.

Weather
Varies considerably on which area you plan on visiting.
